Itinerary

1Hiking The Urquillos Trail from Chinchero Town

At 8:00 AM, the Beyond Andes Guide will pick you up from your hotel. We’ll then drive to Chinchero town, which is the trailhead of the Urquillos Hike. This picturesque colonial village of Chinchero is located at the elevation of 12,200 ft, in a dramatic location high above the windswept plains of the Urubamba Valley, with many Inca ruins around and there is a beautiful colonial-era (Spanish) church, hence you’ll visit them with your private guide, you can also visit the weaving center to learn more about the Andean textiles that some techniques have been passing over the centuries and today the ladies in Chinchero still use them.

After visiting the small Andean village and the ruins of Chinchero, we’ll start our beautiful downhill hike following a short section of the Inca Trail. This trail is linking the towns located high in the mountains with other towns in the valley level (Sacred Valley). The trail descends from 12,200 feet (3700 meters) to 9430 feet (2875 meters), where we will be treated with impressive mountain views, rushing water, waterfalls, colorful wildflowers, and tranquil eucalyptus groves next to the trail. On the halfway, we’ll eat our packed lunch.

After 4-5 hours hiking, we’ll arrive to the quaint village of Urquillos, in the Sacred Valley, a very picturesque Andean town with a quiet plaza in the middle surrounded by houses made of stone and clay with roofs in terra-cotta tiles. We will take a little stroll in the lovely little village of Urquillos. Upon our arrival in this town, our driver will be waiting for us and drive back to the hotel or the train station in Ollantaytambo. The choice is yours.

Faqs Urquillos Hike

The hike to the Urquillos trail depends on your speed and level of physical fitness. On average, this hike takes 4 – 5 hours.

The best time to go to Urquillos Hike is during the dry season, from May through August. These months are actually winter in the Andes and you will have blue skies, amazing views, and the sunshine makes it the best comfortable hiking conditions. However, the trek is available year-round and can offer various benefits throughout the year.

We recommend shoulder-seasons just before and after the rains that is late April, May, and September, October, and early November. During those months the weather is still dry, temperatures are pleasant, and the trail is less crowded.

December through March is the rainy season in the Andes and hiking to the Urquillos Hike is not recommended. Sustained, heavy rains can make the trail unsafe. Rain quite often means snow at higher elevations, too, which is not only unpleasant to hike through, but could dramatically affect your views of the striped mountains!

Trekking during the shoulder season (April, September, October) is weather-dependent. We are willing to book Urquillos Hike 1 day during this time, but if conditions are poor we reserve the right to cancel or modify your trip.

This may just be a day trip to Urquillos Hike, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. In fact, Urquillos Hike is considered a moderately difficult hike.

Urquillos Hike 1 day trek starts at an altitude of 3,750 m/ 12,303 ft and it has a hiking duration of 4 – 5 hours, the highest point you will actually reach on this hike is Chinchero town (the trailhead). That’s enough to take your breath away – literally!

While the hike is only for few hours, it is a steep, downhill walk on some sections, with an elevation loss of nearly 800m (2,625 ft). This can be somethings strenuous for most people.

The weather in Urquillos Hike is very unpredictable, changing frequently and quickly. There are two seasons in the Cusco Region of Peru, where Urquillos Hike is located—Wet Season (December to April) and Dry Season (May to November).

You might see warm weather and sunny skies one minute and then cloudy skies and snowfall the next. The best idea is to make sure you’re prepared for all weather by dressing in layers. The weather during the dry season is usually sunny with little chance of rain. During the wet season, there are significant amounts of rain and snow.
